"No collection of films on the Holocaust can be considered complete without this haunting visual record of the infamous Warsaw Ghetto. One will never know why Wehrmacht Sergeant Heinz Joest decided to celebrate his 43rd birthday in 1941 by illegally photographing inside the ghetto. Or why he kept the pictures hidden for some 40 years until he knew he was dying. But this German soldier's images of the misery, and also the spirit, of its doomed inhabitants form the core of Jack Kuper's extraordinary portrayal of humanity in a nightmare situation." -Editorial Review Amazon.com
A Generation Apart - 1983
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0403060/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
Description copied from website:
A one-hour documentary that explores the impact of the Holocaust on the families of survivors."Children of survivors of the Holocaust ask how that event may have shaped them consciously and unconsciously. The Fishers are the primary focus: filmmaker Jack, his older brother Joe, and their parents who raised three sons in the Bronx. They talk about family dynamics and their perceptions and feelings. Also profiled are Shelley Gelfman, an artist, and her mother Mary, and less intensely, we meet a physician and an actor who are children of survivors. In the conversations, people discuss guilt, love, and loss. The parents suggest they may have placed too much hope on their children's shoulders, been too protective, or held back affection. The children respond." Written by <jhailey@hotmail.com>

Description copied from website:
"Burning Questions: The Story of Catholic Poles in the Holocaust," a multiple-award-winning documentary, offers all the rewards of a home movie: it is stunningly intimate and heartfelt. The title and subtitle are unintentionally misleading. The documentary could better be titled "An American Daughter and a Polish Father Explore His Family's Suffering During WWII." "Burning Questions" tells a simple, easy-to-follow story: the relationship between a very beautiful, young, American girl, Mishael Porembski, and her mysterious, very handsome, foreign-born father, TV cameraman Jan Porembski. As Mishael puts it: "My father's eyes hid a world I'd never fully seen … Even as a child, I could sense that my father wasn't altogether happy…"- Author: Danusha_Goska Save Send Delete 5 December 2010

Orchestra of Exiles - 2012
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1906443/
Description copied from website:
Some stories get lost in the turmoil of their times. It is often only in retrospect that we can discover the true shapers of history. One such man is the prodigious Polish violinist Bronislaw Huberman. Orchestra of Exiles explores this great man's 4-year odyssey, which culminates in the founding of the orchestra that would become the Israel Philharmonic. His fascinating story touches many of the major themes of the 20th century and the unfolding drama of his life is riveting. During the darkest days of a Europe being torn apart by anti- Semitism and Nazi aggression, Huberman's extraordinary efforts saved hundreds of Jewish families from the approaching holocaust and his achievements changed the landscape of cultural history. Before the Nazis came to power Huberman was focused only on building his own monumental career but witnessing Hitler's agenda was a call to action that Huberman could not ignore. Huberman's personal transformation and subsequent heroic struggle to get Jewish musicians out of Europe to found this orchestra will be at the heart of this film.

Shoah - 1985
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090015/
Description copied from website:
Claude Lanzmann directed this 9 1/2 hour documentary of the Holocaust without using a single frame of archive footage. He interviews survivors, witnesses, and ex-Nazis (whom he had to film secretly since though only agreed to be interviewed by audio). His style of interviewing by asking for the most minute details is effective at adding up these details to give a horrifying portrait of the events of Nazi genocide. He also shows, or rather lets some of his subjects themselves show, that the anti-Semitism that caused 6 million Jews to die in the Holocaust is still alive in well in many people that still live in Germany, Poland, and elsewhere.
